MONDAY
Radio static. “Commander, we reconned over the ridge. I think there’s a problem.”
Return static. “What problem?”
“There’s a lake, yes, ma’am. But there’s a lodge with cabins.”
Silence. “Say again?”
“A lodge.”
“Tell me exactly what you’re seeing.”
“The highway runs north-south. There’s a west turn-off. Runs a mile back to the lake. Lodge sits on the north end of the water. Cabins are west. Dirt road circles around in front of them. Volleyball, basketball courts. Couple of firepits. No, it does not look deserted.”
Silence. Long silence. Cursing. More silence. “We will have to get creative, then.”
“How creative?”
“We’re here to train in stealth, camouflage, recon, and surveillance. Maybe we get real-world experience.”
“Whatever you say, Commander.”
“Leave two of your troops there. I want eyes on the area at all times.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
