Why the author wrote this book:

I always start out with an idea for what I hope will be a decent mystery. The story always takes over and adds something more than the mystery. MAMA'S SECRET began with the idea of a promise made in the past and finally kept in the present. Along the way, the story led me to look backward to the trauma experienced by everyone during the Civil War days and forward to how far we have or haven't come since then--and maybe to where we might go from here.
