One Shall Lead

“Run, run, run…quickly, here!” a voice whispered in the dark.

“Duck over here…” another hushed voice called out of the darkness.

“shhhhhhhh…they are close…” Rapid footsteps followed, and then the sound of ones scurrying for cover.

A sudden crack of a branch crunching underfoot broke the silence, while a faint light beam cast its glow on the gray rock, close enough to make them wonder if the doorway of the cave had been discovered.

Christian crouched inside the rock, glancing back at the others. His eyes lingered a moment longer on his brother’s with such an intensity that would deceive any onlooker into thinking he had celebrated many more than just twelve birthdays. They had learned so much over the last few months. Now they would be forced to prove themselves and to act on what they had learned.

He never thought it would come to this. Not so quickly at least. There had been whispers from the fanatics that this problem of cultural uniformity that had arrived, masking itself as virtuous, would spread like wildfire and take over before it was too late. Its errors had first taken over the cities. People had begun by speaking out in aggressive demonstrations challenging the foundations that the American government had been built on. Then small groups began to pop up in the suburbs and countrysides. Soon, the people became so desperate for peace, equality, and freedom that they were convinced to defend themselves by creating laws that eliminated those very things.

A fire began to burn inside of him. He was concealed as had been his aim. The sporadic thumps of his heart made it more of an effort for him to stay still than it would have been to run a mile. It was not that he wasn’t afraid, but that he knew that he was born to do this. He now understood that it would be up to the children to lead the people to redemption. Those wise words that he had found not so long ago still rang in his ears.

Prudentia

It is written, they do say,

Let the children come and pray.

They are simple.

They are true.

They will know

Just what to do.

For when their time comes,

And it is near,

They will turn,

And they will hear.

These children’s voices

They once heard,

Will now rewrite the spoken word.

And in wisdom, they will rise,

An army who’s prepared to fight.

So as warriors you will stand,

All united hand and hand

With important lessons to share

Of how to change the world’s despair.

Christian turned and nodded at his brother, who responded in kind. Then he took one final look at the others who were crouched behind him. It was time…and so he found the courage to emerge…and the others followed him.
