Underground Scouts

By Marie Sontag

Description:

Tadzio and Magdalena weren't prepared for their Polish Scoutmaster's challenge. Not until their parents disappeared. Undercover Scouts, a YA historical novel, brings to light the brave efforts of Polish Boy Scouts and Girl Guides who fought alongside the Polish Underground during WWII.

Book Takeaway:

When all hope is lost, even when you've given something your all, you can still have hope in an unchanging, loving God who will bring His justice in His time.

Why the author wrote this book:

My husband and I visited Poland in 2008 to spend time with a young man we had taken in twelve years earlier as part of a student year-long foreign exchange student program. He took us on a tour of Warsaw's Rising Museum. I had never heard of the Warsaw's Rising, and how the Polish Scouts and Girl Guides played a huge role in this effort to rout the Germans from Warsaw. These teen Scouts wanted to show the Allies that they were prepared to fight for their democratic freedoms. They did not want the Allies to give them over to the Communists. For political reasons, the Allies allowed the Russians to establish their cronies and turn this Christian society into a godless Communist one. I was struck with the passion of these young scouts who gave their lives for their country. I wanted the students I taught in the states to know about these unsung heroes so they would have role models to help stand up for our country today.
