Chapter 1: Grandpa’s Visit
Grandpa Ernest visited us when I was seven years old. I enjoyed his visit greatly. Grandpa was my friend. Even though he could not jump and play with me because his legs hurt, Grandpa liked to talk with me. I told him about my friends at school - the nice ones and the not-so-nice ones. Grandpa told me to treat them all with kindness but to choose my close friends with care.

My twin sister Ebele loved to exercise. She would watch exercise videos and then jump and hop for Grandpa to watch. Grandpa found it entertaining. He made me do some of the exercises with her while he clapped and cheered us on. Ebele also liked to dance ballet. She danced to imaginary music that no one else could hear. I dance a little, but I don’t dance ballet. I think girls are better ballet dancers. Perhaps, Mum and Dad should send Ebele to a dance school. A boarding school would be even better.
Grandpa told us stories about when Mum was a little girl. That made us laugh a lot. While Mum says she was always good, Grandpa told us she was naughty sometimes. It felt nice to know that we were not the only ones that were naughty after all!
Grandpa was not happy that we could only speak English and tried to teach us our native language, Igbo. He gave us a few Igbo books, and we learnt some new Igbo words every day. He taught us how to greet older people at various times of the day in Igbo. I enjoyed learning Igbo.
A few days after Grandpa came to visit, Mum took him to the hospital to see the eye doctor. They gave him an appointment for an eye operation. We came back from school one day to find that Grandpa had a plaster on his right eye. It made him look like a retired pirate, but I didn’t tell anyone that, not even Ebele.
His eye operation had been done at the hospital while we were at school. Grandpa was allowed to come home. He did not have to sleep over at the hospital. Grandpa was resting, but he was not in pain. The eye doctor said the surgery would help Grandpa see well.
