TIME TO WAKE-UP!

Mama duck stretched her head back as she watched the sun lighten the sky. She nudged her six ducklings with her beak, which were nestled snuggly beneath her wing and she softly quacked a happy morning song. Five heads immediately popped up and responded with their own quacky tune.
Standing to her orange webbed feet, Mama shook her white-feathered body as she waddled towards the sparkling lake that greeted them every morning. Four little ducklings followed with a joyful waddle.
Daffnee duck, the runt of the litter, stood next to her sleeping brother, Davie duck and said, “Wake up, wake up! Or you’ll miss this beautiful morning!”
“Go away and let me sleep,” Davie answered. “Today will be just like yesterday.”
“Yesterday was great and today promises to be even better!” Daffnee said. “There are many special treasures to be found today.”
“You say that everyday,” Davie replied.
“And it’s always true.” Daffnee took her foot and shook Davie’s body.
“Alright, alright, I’m coming,” said Davie as he stood and shook his fuzzy yellow feathers.
Daffnee was so light on her feet as she ran to the lake; it was amazing that she was not floating. Davie, on the other hand, scraped his feet against the sand as he slowly followed with his head bowed down.
Mama duck greeted them on the shore’s edge and Daffnee and Davie fell in line behind their family. They floated several yards out into the lake and then the bathing party began. They splashed and they sputtered with such great delight! That is, all except for Davie. He frowned as he watched his brothers and sisters, keeping his distance safely from their water games.
Daffnee came up behind him and spit the water in her beak in a steady stream at Davie. He angrily quacked and flapped his wings as he swam away in a worse mood than when he woke up.
“Daffnee, dear,” her Mama said. “Leave your brother alone.”
“He’s missin’ all the fun!” Daffnee swam happily around her Mama.
“Your fun isn’t his fun,” Mama said softly.
The bathing bash ended and all the ducklings floated next to their Mama. The warmth of the morning sun lulled all of them to a morning’s nap, even Mama duck. None of them noticed how they were drifting further away from the shore. Nor did they pay attention to the changing weather.
