The main character, as a young boy of twelve, arrives with his family from St Louis with California as their destination. They arrive in Colorado Springs, load up with supplies and head west. They encounter elk in the rut which is something they've never seen and the quaking aspen in their fall colors were indescribable in their beauty. They spend the night in a violent but beautiful rainstorm complete with booming earth-shaking thunder and fierce lightning that sets a giant Ponderosa Pine on fire. The next morning they continue their journey through the unimaginable South Park with wild flours, sage, and the impregnable Continental Divide farther to the west. Wildlife of all kinds dot the colorful landscape as they pass through in awe of the beauty that God created.
