Mayflower Chronicles: The Tale of Two Cultures

By Kathryn M. Haueisen

Description:

Four thousands of years two distinct cultures evolved unaware of one another's existence. Separated by what one culture called The Great Sea and known to the other as the Atlantic Ocean, the course of each culture's future changed irreversibly 400 years ago. In 1620 the Mayflower delivered 102 refugees and fortune seekers from England to Cape Cod, where these two cultures first encountered one another. The English sought religious freedom and fresh financial opportunities. The Natives were recovering from the Great Dying. How would they react to one another? How might their experience shape modern cross-cultural encounters.

Book Takeaway:

The Pilgrims and the Native Americans were mutually suspicious and fearful of one another. Yet, they chose to come together to work out a treaty that served both groups well for many years. I believe what they did has an important message for us today as we struggle with what it means to be a multi-cultural country.

Why the author wrote this book:

Much of what we've been taught about the "first" Thanksgiving overlooks the vital parts played by the Native Americans and the women who arrived on the Mayflower. i wrote the historical account to give the Natives and the women a voice in the famous store. It is about real people and real events with realistic conversations.
