Why the author wrote this book:

On a trip to Galveston, I was sitting at the seawall on a stormy day watching the waves crash. I knew the history of the 1900 Galveston Hurricane and the devastation it caused. Suddenly the story came to me and I told my husband on the drive home. He said, "You should write that up." And I did.
