Chapter One
Fear hides in the dark crevices of my mind, and when night
falls, that fear attacks and squeezes like a boa constrictor
tightening around my body.
Where am I? How did I get here? e heat is sweltering, but
chills shoot down the center of my back, stinging like needles
piercing my skin. An eerie sensation in the pit of my stomach
tells me I am not alone. Balling my hands into sts, I dig for the
courage to take a step. I hold my breath, trying not to make a
sound, and ease my right leg forward. As I shift my weight, I
exhale with a sigh of relief when the board does not creak
beneath my bare foot. My eyes burn from straining in the dark‐
ness, and I squeeze them closed for a minute. A bloodcurdling
scream shakes the door and vibrates through my body. My eyes
spring open. A tiny, horizontal stream of light appears a few
yards in front of me. A door… the scream came from in there.
Someone needs help. A bead of perspiration drips from the end of
my nose, and my stomach leaps into my chest when it hits the
top of my foot. Shaking o my fear, I swallow hard and inch
forward. Only a few more steps to go. I force my legs to move until
I am in front of the door. With a trembling hand, I reach out,
moving my arm from side to side, feeling for the knob. Before
my fingers make contact, an ear-splitting shriek wails from the
other side, rattling the door and sending my heart flying from my chest.
