The Tributary Commentary
Isaiah 58:10, Luke 6:38
From the Red River on the Northern border to the Rio Grande on the Southern border, Texas has an abundance of beautiful waterways. Puppy Ciao takes place in the small town of Kerrville, Texas, where the Guadalupe River runs through the center of town. This is where the mystery begins.
In Puppy Ciao, chapter one, the main character, Jeannie McKay, says Johnson Creek is a tributary to the Guadalupe River. A tributary is a small river or stream flowing into a larger river or lake. The greater sized body of water can also be called the mainstem. The place where the tributary empties into the mainstem is called the confluence. We’ll learn more about the parts of a river later in this unit.
When we help someone, whether sharing what we have, giving someone praise, or even telling a friend about Jesus, we are like the tributary. What we pour out, flows into someone else—the mainstem.
Isaiah 58:10 says, “if you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday.”
Are you afraid you’ll give too much? What will happen when your supply runs out? Don’t worry. Stop by God’s filling station. Praying, reading the Bible, and giving thanks are things we can do to please God and fill our spiritual tanks.
Luke 6:38 says, “give and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure, you use it will be measured back to you.”
So, go ahead and give. God won’t let your river run dry!
Pray: Lord, fill us with your Spirit so we can pour into others like the tributary pours into the river. Let us see through your eyes and show us where we can share your love. Amen.
