Prologue
Mr. Archibault pulled open the last drawer in his wife’s bureau. She had been living in a locked facility for months now, thanks to the dementia. It took this long for him to finally finish cleaning out the rest of her things in the small bedroom they once shared. His hand touched something smooth, and he pulled out a small jewelry box. He didn’t think much of it as he lifted the lid and stared at a photograph long and hard. Who is that? he wondered. He turned the photograph over. Four names were written on the back: Rose, Lisi, Ruth, Peter. Jim knew Rose Meyer, longtime best friend and next-door neighbor to his wife, Lisi, but who were the other two people?
Since her illness, forgotten memories began to surface; memories of her childhood, the childhood of a woman he thought he knew. Now, sitting here in the familiar bedroom, Jim realized he had just opened the front page of a special story and wondered how much of his wife’s story he knew at all.
