Why the author wrote this book:My great, great-uncle was the first American consul in Nagasaki, Japan, from 1859-1864. Although the consul in this story is a product of my imagination, the possible attraction between a Christian American consul, like my relative, and a daughter of a samurai provided ample material for an exploration of steps toward faith and love. |
