The Choice

By Suzanne Woods Fisher

Description:

Lancaster County has always been her home--but where does her heart belong? One moment Carrie Weaver was looking forward to running away with Lancaster Barnstormers pitcher Solomon Riehl--plans that included leaving the Amish community where they grew up. The next moment she was staring into a future as broken as her heart. Now, Carrie is faced with a choice. But will this opportunity be all she hoped? Or will this decision, this moment in time, change her life forever? A tender story of love, forgiveness, and looking below the surface, The Choice uncovers the sweet simplicity of the Amish world--and shows that it's never too late to find your way back to God.

Book Takeaway:

I never want to whack a reader on the head about faith with a two-by-four…I just want readers to try to see God in their lives. Just…try! He won’t disappoint you.

Why the author wrote this book:

How did I come up with the story for The Choice? I had in mind Carrie Weaver…a young woman who had accepted her father’s point of view, then her boyfriend’s…without ever thinking things out for herself. I knew I wanted a story where Carrie grew into a woman with her own point of view…about her church, her life, and about her faith.

While back in Lancaster County, researching Amish Peace: Simple Wisdom for a Complicated World. I saw signs for the Lancaster Barnstormers…a professional baseball team. It was April, and I passed by many Amish one-room schoolhouses. During recess and lunch, Amish boys played a spirited game of softball. That’s where the idea of a baseball scout-- passing by and noticing Solomon Riehl’s fast ball pitch—and the Lancaster Barnstormers came together.

The Lancaster Barnstormer team was kind enough to let me ask questions, plus read the manuscript for corrections. And to let Sol pitch for their team!

All in all, Carrie’s story is one about growing up and finding yourself, and finding God in the midst of that journey. I never want to whack a reader on the head about faith with a two-by-four…I just want readers to try to see God in their lives. Just…try! He won’t disappoint you.
