DAVID--The Illustrated Novel, Vol. II

By Michael Hicks Thompson

Description:

Volume II chronicles the events and people that surrounded and defined David from age 30 until his death at age 70.
Following Saul's death in the Great Philistine Battle, David is crowned King of Judah--Southern Israel. Saul's surviving pitiful-excuse-for-a-son, Ish-Bosheth, becomes King of Northern Israel and its 10 tribes. But after Ish-Bosheth's assassination by this own men, David is crowned King over all 12 tribes of Israel.
He then conquers the Jebusite city of Jebus, makes it Israel's new fortified city, and re-names it Jerusalem --a combination of Jebus and the city's original name, Salem. A King's palace is built, and David brings the ark of the covenant out of hiding and into Israel's new capital city.
Battles with neighboring enemies continue, as does turmoil in the King's own palace. David commits adultery with Bathsheba, has her husband murdered, and then loses his new son, born of Bathsheba. It's a loss David takes as punishment from God. David repents.
Later, David lives the life of a revered, able, and conquering King. But in his 60s, David's favored son, Absalom, attempts to usurp his father as king. As does another of David's sons only a few years later.
Finally, David anoints Solomon as his successor, but not without more intrigue and internal strife.
