Interview with Rume Emma-Okerhe 2025

When did you feel called to become an author?

I have always loved the idea of being an author. But I’d say, about seven/eight years ago, I felt the Lord stir my heart and awaken a fresh passion for what I would call a childhood dream. It wasn’t until then that I started to actively ask the Lord what He would have me do with fiction and then seek ways to hone my writing skills.

What did you learn while writing this book?

My first lesson would be the core message in Rains of Mercy - God in His sovereignty and love, makes everything work together for His children and we can be assured of this truth. The second lesson would be to trust God in every process. If He gives an idea, He will help you bring it to fruition. There were times I wasn’t sure how the book would come together. Mind you, I had plans written down, I had drafted the plot arc, had a team I worked with, you know the nitty-gritty of writing and publishing, but honestly, on many occasions, getting the book to the hands of readers would seem like a far-reaching future. But now I look back and realise that the writing and publishing process wasn’t so bad afterall.

What is the toughest part of writing in your genre?

I would say research and endeavoring to retain the authenticity of the Nigerian/British culture while also ensuring that the story is still relatable to people who are not primarily from the said group.

If someone were to look at your Google search history (all for research of course!), what types of things would we find?

This is such an interesting question. Well, asides writing, I am a stroke/neuro physiotherapist in England where I live. Online, you will also see me talking a lot about living for God and stewarding your purpose for His glory.

If you could have coffee with an author, dead or alive, whose work you admire, who would that be? What would you ask him or her?

I really like Tessa Afshar’s writing style and much more, her surrendered heart. I see how she seeks to honor God through her stories. My question to her would be how she remains surrendered to the Lord’s will whilst honing her craft. How does she shut down the noise while sharing the Father’s heart through fiction?

What’s your go-to drink while writing?

Hot chocolate and some cookies.

If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Be all that God has called you to be. Be anxious for nothing.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not writing?

I love road trips with good music so that’s my go-to when I’m not writing. I also enjoy spending time with friends and family.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Old Town Symphony by Milla Holt, The Royal Artisan by Tessa Afsher, Green Water Lilies by Tope Omotosho, Her Tycoon Hero by Narelle Atkins, Love, Scribbles and Other Things by Joan Embola.

What can we look forward to next?

I’ve started working on a spin-off from Rains of Mercy. It’s going to be set around early to mid 2000s as well. I’m trusting the new book project will be a blessing too.
