Why the author wrote this book:The idea for the story sprang from when my children worked at a thoroughbred breeding farm, feeding and watering the mares and their colts and fillies after they delivered. One particular colt took to following them around the paddocks. He liked to play fetch and often carried a stick in his mouth for the kids to throw for him. He grew quickly, and the halter the owners placed on him embedded into his face. The kids told the owners about it, but they were busy and blew it off. The next day, the colt did not eat or get up to play with the kids. The following morning, the colt did not raise his head, but lay on the ground unmoving. In tears, the children demanded that the owner call the vet. The vet came and removed the halter from the colt's face, which had become infected. The vet told them he doubted the colt would make it. The children were beside themselves with worry as they loved this colt more than all the other horses. They determined to fast and pray for this sweet little horse. The following morning, with trepidation, they returned to care for the horses. The colt was standing up and eating. They told the owner that the colt had recovered. Mr. Jesse, the owner, was so moved by the children's care and concern that he gifted them that colt. His name was CJ's Gift. I named one of Lady Sophie's colt's in Flat Deception after him. |
