Interview with DiAnn Mills

Welcome, DiAnn! We're so excited to have you in the spotlight today! Where did the concept for High Treason originate?
The idea came from a solved cold case in New York City. The FBI uncovered an assassination attempt on a Saudi Arabian Ambassador. From that loosely connected case, I created a story set in Houston. A Saudi Arabian Royal Prince escorts his mother for cancer treatment at MD Anderson. An assassination attempt on the prince puts the FBI and CIA on alert.

Do you have a favorite character in High Treason?
I’d have to say CIA Operative Monica Alden. She understood the Saudi Arabian culture, specifically a woman’s role, and respectfully did her job. She kept the prince and his sisters safe while seeking out who was behind the assassin attempt. As a result, she helped solve a crime, made friends, and found love in Special Agent Kord Davidson.

What do you hope is the biggest takeaway for readers?
I want readers to understand respect works both ways in relationships with other cultures. Too many times we look at those who are different than us with disdain instead of kindness.

What advice would you give a new author who is interested in writing romantic suspense?
Read, read, read romantic suspense.
Invest in workshops and conferences that teach good writing as well as social media techniques.
Write every day.

Are you a plotter or pantser?
Pantster! Organic writing that’s rooted in character.

What time of day do you normally write?
Early morning. That’s when I’m the freshest and most alert.

Are you a morning bird or a night owl? Morning bird! I want to see the sun rise.

What is one of your favorite Bible verses?
Jeremiah 20:9 NIV
If I say, “I will not mention him,
or speak any more in his name,”
there is in my heart as it were a burning fire
shut up in my bones,
and I am weary with holding it in,
and I cannot.

Love that verse! You live in Houston. What do you love most about living in Texas?
The different types of terrain – from mountains to desert to Gulf coastal. Everything we need to explore and have a great time. Houston is the 4th largest city in the country and the most diverse. I love the diverse part – a slice of what heaven will be like.

What do you like least?
I live in Houston, so possibly the hurricanes.

If you knew someone was planning to visit Houston, what one place would you recommend they see?
I’d say the George Ranch https://www.georgeranch.org/; the Houston Museum of Natural Science http://www.hmns.org/ and the Galleria https://www.visithoustontexas.com/listings/the-galleria/19488/

Any parting thoughts?
I am very active online and would love to connect with readers on any of the following social media platforms or others listed at diannmills.com.
facebook.com/diannmills
twitter.com/diannmills
instagram.com/diannmillsauthor
I am especially interested in learning what readers would like to see in a DiAnn Mills’ romantic suspense.
