When she was in middle school, her family settled in Fredericksburg, VA. After graduating from Mary Washington College (now the University of Mary Washington), she and her husband earned graduate degrees at the University of Florida. They lived in Gainesville, FL, for nearly 20 years before returning home to Virginia. Steve and Susan are members of Highway Assembly of God in Fredericksburg. They are avid Florida Gator and Washington Redskin football fans.
